android o
Yesterday, Google announced – quite out of nowhere – on the Android Developers Blog Android O officially. What is surprising, of course not, that a new version is pending, which begins following the alphabet with “O” but that there was already the first Developer Preview, which was also available for download.

These first downloads are directed specifically only s developer, that are still subject to error and can not be used for everyday use.

The files can be downloaded on this page the following devices are supported: Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, Nexus Player, pixel C and pixel XL. Means, conversely, that, of course, many older Nexus devices will stay on track and do not receive Android O support. Also, if you are not developers, of course, you can flash your hardware – if you possess the above-mentioned devices – but you do it at your own risk and it is particularly advisable as it is said not.

Compared to previous years, a few things have obviously not changed: Of course, the name of the new iteration is not yet known and will be later announced a year (which of course does not stop us from speculating before, such as the version might be called – Oreo, anyone?).

In addition, Google has not yet fully opened with this Preview Pandora’s box, should read: While we get the first indication of things that change over Android 7.0 nougat, but the list is far from complete. Just design and technology will make changes probably again later Google.

A bit can the Californian company but already look at the cards, so we can list the most important innovations already known before.

Background Limits

With Android O, Google will take care of the energy consumption of the hardware first time. Greater rigor and thus longer battery life would be reached by the “Background Limits”. This feature should be limited in terms of the tasks running in the background apps. Split one has the limits in three areas:

  • implicit broadcasts
  • background services
  • location updates

Developers you are so powerful new tools to the hand with which they can align apps much more specific so that only resources are used, which are also needed. What impact does that have on the battery life of the devices, we will hopefully see if expected pending the introduction of Android O in the fall.

Notification Channels

Even with the Android O notifications, the developers of the operating system to deal once again. The notifications are also a visual slightly differently, so you can see at a glance more easily what is just pure rushes for a message. With the newly introduced Notification Channels want one now sort the notifications new and give developers appropriate options on hand to what kind of notification is.

For us as consumers in the innovation is the advantage that we can adjust very granular yourself how we want to proceed with certain notifications of various applications.

Autofill APIs

Maybe you use on your smartphone indeed already a password manager app that saves you having to re-enter each time a new username and password – for example, in forms or if their taking payments. With the Autofill APIs makes Google both developers and us users easier.

So, as you can choose your favorites, for example in the various keyboard apps, which is then to be in the future thanks to this new interface for the autofill Apps true: You choose simply from a menu the app, manage your data, store to and paste.

Picture-in-picture function for mobile devices

Android TV you know the picture-in-picture mode perhaps already. Google expands the now out on smartphones and tablets, so you can start an app and use while the video previously launched is constantly present in a small window.

How convenient that is on a smartphone, be times undecided for tablets but definitely an interesting and laudable feature.

Adaptive Icons

Even with the icons will look at Android O what to do. On some devices, Android naked or barely matched Android is used, companies such as Samsung, Huawei, and HTC but adapt the software much as they wish to. This means that among other things, the icons are displayed differently.

The “Adaptive Icons” now enable developers to come along in each matching robe, so no matter whether an icon is square or has rounded edges, etc.

This will work with the developer to place their design for an icon in the foreground while the background is cut accordingly so that it fits your own UI. In addition, allow the adaptive icons that developers use a lot of visual effects. So an icon can show a parallax effect or pulsate example.

These are not all the innovations that Google has revealed so far. To the above, it also gives more support to the LDAC codec or WiFi Aware, also the keyboard navigation is improved. Read can her on the Android Developers blog or directly from the Android Developers if you want to delve deeper into the matter as a developer.

There, you also have to act as her as a developer to take advantage of the new opportunities. If the Google I / O takes place, we will find appropriate workshops galore. Which are then not only be safe for developers exciting but give us further insight into Android O and functioning of new features.

At least then we can inform you in more detail about what to expect with the next version of Android.
