Google solves the screen problems of the Pixel 2 XL with a new saturated mode and less luminosity

The November security patch for Pixel phones did more than protecting from the KRACK vulnerability. It was attacking were the last phones of Google cogen more as we have been able to perceive in our analysis: the screen.

There is three related news that has been introduced in this patch. The maximum brightness of the screen has been reduced by 50 nits, the navigation bar has been turned off after a period of inactivity and the expected saturated color mode has been entered.

More lively colors

In view of the criticism of users that the colors of the Pixel 2 XL screen are off, Google has taken into account that “the color mode is a choice of each one” and that the objective is to achieve a more faithful reproduction of the colors.

In the end, Google has had to surrender to the request of the users and, as planned, offers a new color mode that receives the appropriate name of ‘Saturated’. When activated, the colors are more vivid and less faithful to reality, warns Google, similar to how they were shown in the first Pixel. This color mode is available in both Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL.

Navigation that goes off

One of the problems that plague OLED screens is image retention/screen burn when an image remains static for a long time. Google claimed to be working with developers to include a clear navigation bar that matches the application’s theme and has now decided to take action on the matter.

In this update, the navigation bar will be turned off by changing the blank buttons for others in a dull gray after a certain period of inactivity. This change is available for both Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL.

Brightness reduction

The latest novelty, although in theory, you should not be able to perceive it, is the reduction of the maximum brightness of the screen. They are only 50 nits that, according to Google, you should be unable to perceive but will help to significantly reduce the screen load. In this case, it only affects the Pixel 2 XL.

It seems that it is clear that Google plans to fix the problems of the Pixel 2 XL screen through software and patches, although it will be necessary to see to what extent it is possible.

Improve, yes, although the “blueing” when viewing the screen from a certain angle can hardly be corrected only by zeros and ones.
