In August 2015, Huawei’s factories left a small unpretentious smartphone that would make a big noise: the Huawei P8 Lite.
The lighter version of the P8, as the name suggests, this mobile has met with a great success and is still today the best-selling Huawei smartphone, by far. It is therefore quite natural that the Chinese manufacturer wanted to capitalize on this success by releasing it’s Huawei P8 Lite version 2017.
The ways of marketing are sometimes complex. Hoping to replicate the success of the P8, Huawei has just formalized a few months after the release of the Huawei P9 and a few weeks before the release of the Huawei P10 a P8 Lite edition 2017.
Logic cash apart, this new P8 takes, in addition, one end Of the features of the 6X, the last mobile of Honor, the daughter-daughter of Huawei, but the whole in a design close to that of Honor 8.
In this Huawei P8 Lite new vintage, we find an IPS Full HD screen of 5.2 inches, behind which stirs a mobile chip house, the Kirin 655 (4 cores Cortex-A53 at 2.1 GHz and 4 others at 1, 7 GHz), aided by a Mali-T830MP2 GPU and 3 GB of RAM.
Unlike Honor 8, the P8 Lite does not have a dual photo sensor, but a single main module of 12 Mpx on the back of the camera and a second module of 8 Mpx on the front.
The P8 Lite 2017 is equipped with all the wireless technologies that one can expect from a device in 2017: Wi-Fi 802.11 b / g / n, Bluetooth 4.1, GPS, Glonass and FM radio. We note the presence of a fingerprint sensor on the back, a micro-USB port – no USB type C unfortunately.
The mobile can accommodate either two nano-Sim cards or an SD card + a nano-Sim. Finally, as on the Honor 8, it is a 3,000 mAh battery that takes care of powering everything, while Android 7.0 Nougat is hidden behind the Emotion UI 5.0 interface.
The P8 Lite 2017 is available at around 250 € at all the good resellers of the Web.
With two or three details, one would have thought that Huawei recycles its mobile molds. Indeed, the P8 Lite 2017, far from resuming the features of the first P8 of the name, draws much from Honor 8.
Same face in curved glass, framed with lower and upper borders always too imposing to our taste. It’s simple, from the front, only the location of the camera and the seal of the mark below the screen distinguish the two moving.
On the back, it’s about the same story, since only the number of photo sensors differentiates the P8 Lite from Honor 8.
But in itself, beyond the visible lack of originality question design, one can not blame very much this P8 Lite 2017. The two glass facades, although they are messy, are nonetheless pleasant in hand and Good bill; Attention to the fingerprints.
The finishes are clean and the plastic joint does not spoil the impression of the seriousness of the set. So we’re dealing with a simple, no-frills design.
The moderate size of the mobile allows easy grip and it is possible to cover the vast majority of the screen without having to do too much digital gymnastics. The fingerprint sensor is very efficient and, coupled with a fast screen flicker, allows unlocking its mobile in a barely a second.
Strange thing, on the other hand, biometric unlocking can only be used in conjunction with a numeric code. It is impossible to couple the unlocking with fingerprints with a pattern or a password, damage.
Finally, the P8 Lite 2017 manages much better the rise in temperature than the Honor 8, despite similar materials.
This is probably due to a slightly less expressive mobile chip. In any case, Huawei’s mobile never heats to the point of causing any discomfort.
Despite its resemblance to the Honor 8, this P8 Lite 2017 does not equip exactly the same slab. He succeeded nonetheless in delivering a very honorable display quality, except for colorimetry.
Indeed after having managed rather well with Honor 8 and 6X, Huawei slips slightly with this P8 Lite 2017, since the Delta E of the latter is 4.8. A measure a little high compared to the threshold of the 3 below which the human eye can very difficult to perceive drifts.
The fault especially to the green tones a little too far from reality. The default color temperature is fairly correct at 6,846 kelvins, but purists will be able to get closer to the 6,500 K standard by placing the color head slider (in “Settings – Display”) as on the capture Screen below. This configuration makes it possible to reach a temperature of 6,574 kelvins.
Finally, the tactile delay is at a good average, at 77 milliseconds, while the remanence is at 13 ms, providing a globally acceptable display and use reactivity. Overall, Huawei delivers a well-priced IPS display that certainly does not compete with industry leaders or mobile phones with good AMOLED screens, but remains quite satisfactory for the vast majority of users.
INTERFACE AND NAVIGATION
With the transition to Android 7.0 Nougat and Emotion UI 5.0, Huawei has made some efforts on the interface and navigation side.
The most visible are probably the option to opt either for an iOS-inspired interface, with virtual desktop chaining, or for something closer to an Android stock with an app drawer.
Lovers of any edge will find there their happiness and the possibilities of customization of the interface are strengthened.
More generally, the EMUI 5.0 interface is more finite and efficient than before; We feel that the overlay was thought to offer a personalized experience, but closer to the Android by default. It is also pleasant to see mobiles finally arrive native Android Nougat.
The general ergonomics and navigation will be quite familiar to the regulars of Android: a panel of customizable notifications, virtual offices, widgets, everything is there.
Note that Huawei also offers some interesting features, such as the ability to change the order of the navigation buttons, to bring up a floating menu, to control certain actions with a movement and even to use the screen with one hand with a Smaller display. What to offer a complete experience, suitable for the greatest world.
On the video side, the P8 Lite 2017 has no problem decoding all the most popular formats, whatever the quality.
The basic player allows to window video or to speed up playback, but hardly more. To take advantage of more advanced features, installing a third-party application is recommended.
This new P8 lite takes advantage of a headphone output with satisfactory power and clean rendering since the distortion is kept at a very low level and the sound scene well marked. We would have just liked a somewhat broader dynamic.
The single loudspeaker on the bottom edge produces a slightly loud sound, but saturates slightly at full volume. It is best to restrict it to hands-free calls.
On the video game side, as on the Honor 6X, the Mali-T830 MP2 allows you to run all the titles available on the Play Store without too much worry or downsizing, but this will require a slight adjustment of graphics in most cases.
The P8 Lite remains an efficient gaming machine even if it does not stand up to the absolute tenors.
The P8 Lite 2017 does not take advantage of the dual sensor mode that is now spreading at Huawei. However, the performance of the P8 Lite’s photo module does not detract from the performance of the dual module of the Honor 8.
While there is a particularly strong tendency to smooth out the details, similar to what can be seen on a OnePlus 3,
for example, and a slight loss of contrast to Honor 8 – which takes advantage of a black and white sensor – the scene remains nevertheless clean, with a good level of detail for 12 Mpx.
A white balance pleasantly respected and, rare enough to be emphasized, a mastered gamma that allows to distinguish details even in deep blacks.
An excellent surprise, even in low light, the new P8 Lite is not too bad. If it still smooths the image, it is especially to avoid the too great presence of digital noise.
We have the right to a scene a little flat, but clean enough, quite legible and without too much grain. Here again, the colors are respected, even if the dense areas suffer from a slight desaturation due to the ISO rise. But a small correction of the processing algorithm could make this P8 Lite 2017 a very competent photophone for its price.
You can find the P8 Lite 2017 in our face to face photo.
In order not to spoil the party, the trigger is fast, even if the smartphone sometimes hatches a little while shooting in a burst. The focus, for its part, is not prayer. The front sensor delivers on its side generous cliches in detail, even though, once again, smoothing is present, even when the “beauty” mode is disabled.
Whether it is called P8 Lite 2017, Honor 8 Lite (as in China) or Nova Lite (as in Japan), this mobile is an undeniable success for Huawei. The brand has nicely improved a successful recipe and therefore delivers a highly competent mobile on its tariff segment. Only Huawei hiccups, this new P8 risks entering in frontal competition with the mobiles Honor; Enough to create severe internal competition.
