BMW integrate their cars in the IoT through BMW Labs

If there is time to explain what the Internet of Things (IoT) then do it in a nutshell: intelligent electronics integrating all of course connected to the internet to a common network. BMW Labs is an online laboratory for ConnectedDrive services, offering openness for new applications in the automobile.

First it should be noted that BMW Labs services are still in the testing phase, the first tests being conducted in the US, England, France, Spain, Germany and Australia, using a beta version in English. Secondly, BMW Labs can only be associated with customers who have or those who opt for the navigation system Professional with BMW ConnectedDrive Online and services.

The first step in the integration of BMW cars in IoT platform was made by IFTTT (If This Then That). This is a free web service through which users can create conditional procedure known as “recipes” that gives them the freedom to combine “Triggers” with “actions” related.

They can currently select from over 260 different services, such as Twitter, Facebook, Google Drive, or SMS e-mail and connect to the smart home smart devices such as Hue, Nest or Netatmo.

IFTTT recipes allow users to connect their BMW with these services according to their preferences. For example, you can automatically turn the lights on the house when their BMW car approaching. Also, the garage door can be opened and heating or air conditioning of the house to be enabled.

The family can be informed when the vehicle user is close to a particular location, for example, to know when one of them is picked up from school. However, if the car is parked, its location can be stored as a link to Google Maps to remind the owner’s whereabouts.

BMW Group is the first automaker in the world that allows this kind of customized features via IFTTT service. In this regard, BMW Labs channel is now available on the website and can be activated IFTTT here, where you have a few models Recipes. They can be enabled or created from scratch directly on the website or through dedicated IFTTT applications.
